Evaluating the Efficacy of a University-Based Center in Promoting Well-Being in College Students
Neeru Deep
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northwestern State University of Louisiana
During the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the primary concerns of the university leaders was students' mental health. Through the action research cycle, a university-based Center was created to promote the well-being of college students. The current research is an observation phase of the action research. The purpose of this study is to investigate how a university-based Center for Positivity, Well-being, and Hope promotes the domains of well-being as described in Seligman's PERMA model of well-being to determine future programming. The study applied an identical concurrent mixed methods research design to answer three research questions (RQ). RQ1. How does a university-based Center for Positivity, Well-being, and Hope promote the domains of Seligman's PERMA model of well-being in college students? RQ 2. In what ways does the Center for Positivity, Well-being, and Hope promote physical and mental health in students? RQ 3. What are the desired activities students would like to see on the Center to promote their overall well-being? A purposive sample of 19 graduate students enrolled in the Psychology and Counseling program evaluated the efficacy of the Center. Multiple questionnaires: PERMA-Profiler Measure (Butler & Kern, 2016), the PERMA-Profiler Measure overview (Butler & Kern, 2016), the CoPWH Evaluation I, and the CoPWH Evaluation II questionnaires (Self-developed questionnaires) were administered to collect data. The participants answered the open-ended and closed-ended questionnaires independently and in the focus groups discussions. The integration of the thematic analysis of qualitative data and descriptive statistics for quantitative data concluded that the Center promotes well-being as described in Seligman's PERMA model and holistic health in college students. The integration of the data also uncovered future programming recommendations for the Center. In conclusion, a university-based Center for Positivity, Well-being, and Hope promotes well-being in college students. This research has implications for promoting a well-being culture in educational settings, workplaces, and communities.
