Time and Sports Management: A Correlational Examination of Internships and Employment
Andrew Sellers
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Concordia University Chicago
Experiential learning requirements, such as internships and practicum, are common requirements in undergraduate sports management programs. These courses typically require the sports management student to complete a set number of hours while being guided by both their internship site supervisor and their faculty advisor. Although these internships are important for future employment, little research exists addressing how the factors of internship length and contact with site and university leaders relate to employment. This study focused on the strength of the relationship between required internship clock hours, time spent with the site supervisor, time spent with the faculty advisor, and the time it takes for students to obtain a full-time job in the sports industry after graduation. The importance of this study was based on the concept that although employment in sports is a typical goal of undergraduate students across the sports discipline, there are no universal standards of practice among universities that ensure effective, efficient, and economic benefits for these students. The 31 usable responses from participants resulted in weak-to-none and weak-to-moderate relationships. However, the study also found other factors that could potentially enhance the operation of a university's sports management program. Most notably, experiential learning is not solely limited to the success of student employment but is also something potentially necessary for faculty.
