Adaptation and Evaluation of the Family Behavior Support Application (FBSApp) Paired with Collaborative Coaching for Spanish-Speaking Families
Claire Winchester
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Vanderbilt University
The purpose of this study was to explore and evaluate the necessary adaptations to the Family Behavior Support application (FBSApp) paired with collaborative coaching for Spanish-speaking families of young children with disabilities and co-occurring challenging behaviors (CB) in home contexts. We utilized a multi-phase mixed methods research design (QUAL->QUAN/qual) to explore stakeholders' perspectives on the adapted intervention, and to examine the effects of the intervention on caregivers' use of targeted intervention strategies and children's use of CB. Qualitative methods included semi-structured interviews with early childhood professionals experienced in providing coaching to Spanish-speaking families and focus groups with Spanish-speaking families of young children. Quantitative methods included a multiple probe across behaviors single-case research design with embedded qualitative methods (i.e., caregiver questionnaire). Results indicate a continued and prevalent need for flexible, family-centered supports for Spanish-speaking families. Stakeholders reported the adapted intervention favorably across all phases of study, and single-case data indicated an increase in strategy use and reduction in CB for all families. Implications for research and practice are discussed. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
