SMARTFUTURES versus Other Career Education Platforms: School Counselor Self-Efficacy and MTSS
Arwa F. Livick
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
This study aimed to learn about Pennsylvania school counselors' use of career education platforms for post-secondary preparedness. An extensive review of previous literature revealed gaps regarding school counselor self-efficacy using career education platforms, using the Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework in career education, and the Career Education and Work Standards (CEW) Standards. Two research questions emerged through the lenses of social-cognitive and bioecological theories. The first is: What is the relationship between the self-efficacy of Pennsylvania school counselors who use SMARTFUTURES and those who use other platforms? The second question: Using the MTSS framework, what is the comparison between the number of CEW Standards completed using SMARTFUTURES versus other platforms? A quantitative methodology with a non-experimental design was used using two survey instruments, the Career Counseling Self-Efficacy Scale-Modified (CCSES-M) and the researcher-created MTSS within CEW Standards Questionnaire. Data were collected through Qualtrics and analyzed using SPSS. 113 Pennsylvania K-12 school counselors who use career education platforms participated. It was shown that the self-efficacy of school counselors who use SMARTFUTURES is higher than those who use other platforms. There was no determination that school counselors who use SMATFUTURES completed more CEW Standards than others. The results of this study are valuable to Pennsylvania school counselors due to the nature of state requirements for post-secondary preparedness and adds to the research on MTSS, especially in career education. Further research on MTSS in career education is recommended as this study is one of few to determine the application within career education. Implications can promote changes in the preparation of counselors-in-training, supervision of school counselors after graduation, and training in application in the workforce.
