Predictors of Anxiety, Depression, and Stress during the University to Workforce Transition
Elizabeth A. Mulherron-Cayton
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, Biola University
There are strong bodies of evidence supporting the connections between aspects of mental health, such as stress, anxiety, and depression to life outcomes. This study examined stress, anxiety, and depression as related to employability, parental attachment (anxious and avoidant) to mothers and fathers, and spiritual maturity during the university to workforce transition in emerging adults. These relationships were measured through self-report inventories distributed to 178 adults with completed or soon to be completed bachelor's degrees, primarily from a small, private Christian university. It was predicted that employability and both anxious and avoidant attachment to mothers and fathers would predict anxiety, stress, and depression. Furthermore, that spiritual maturity would moderate the relationship between attachment and anxiety, stress, and depression. Data were analyzed using a modified Hayes PROCESS Macro Model 1 (Hayes, 2017). Separate analyses were conducted for each outcome variable: DASS totals, depression, anxiety, and stress. Results support employability and attachment predict depression, stress, and overall distress. Further, the relationship between attachment and combined depression, anxiety, and stress scores is significant. Spiritual maturity was found to moderate some relationships between attachment and levels of depression, anxiety, and stress depending on specific interactions and parental attachment being measured.
