Lived Experience of Multicultural Leadership Intentionality in Counselor Educators
Erica L. Rampelberg
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
This study is an exploration of the lived experience of multicultural leadership intentionality in counselor educators. There is a gap in the literature regarding counselor educators' lived experience of intentionality in multicultural leadership development. The research question that drove this study was "What is the lived experience of multicultural leadership intentionality in counselor educators?" The design of the study was interpretive phenomenological because the essence of this internal subjective experience is what is being explored. The population selected was counselor educators and the sample from that population included educators who had an active teaching or supervising role in the last year, a minimum of one year of experience, a CACREP-accredited CES degree, and no current disciplinary actions. The data analysis was conducted with thematic analysis and the use of MAXQDA software. Findings suggest a common awareness of intentionality across participants and common motivations for personal and professional development. The identified themes were multicultural competency and growth, recognizing privilege and challenging personal bias, recognizing marginalization within the academic setting and instructional content, and being an advocate and an activist. Implications for future research are that additional studies are needed to measure and cultivate the growth of multicultural leadership intentionality.
