An Exploration of Barriers, Differentiated Pathways, and Leadership Attributes from the Perspectives of Female Superintendents
Tiffany Silvers
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Trevecca Nazarene University
Barriers surround top-tier leadership in K-12 education. The superintendent position continues to be occupied by male leaders despite the overwhelming number of female educators. This qualitative study explored the disparity between male and female leaders through the perspectives of female superintendents in a southern state. This study relied on current literature to explore barriers that have existed since the creation of education. It explored internal and external barriers, pathways, and leadership attributes utilizing a document review from female superintendents' and mentors' perspectives. Analysis revealed that while barriers continue to exist, strong sponsorship, motivation, and differentiated pathways can assist in achieving parity.
