A Qualitative Exploration of Self-Worth Development Regarding School Counselors' Job Duties
Amber E. Windsor
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
A school counselor's education and training are often inconsistent with the job duties assigned by the school. These discrepancies from perceived appropriate job duties can lead to uncertainty and negatively impact the school counselor's sense of self-worth. This study explored the research question: "What are the experiences of school counselors' non-counseling duties regarding their sense of personal and professional self-worth?" Using generic qualitative inquiry, this study explored the experiences of job duties on personal and professional self-worth as it related to middle school counselors. The population consisted of current middle school counselors with more than three years of experience. Twelve participants were selected by using non-probability purposive sampling, and data were collected through semi-structured open-ended interviews. Thematic analysis helped the researcher examine participant perspectives to uncover patterns in the data collected from the research interviews. Three themes emerged including direct counseling as having the most positive impact on a school counselor's sense of self-worth. Other interactions in the school environment helped school counselors feel valued, and other duties not related to counseling had a negative effect on the success of a school counselor. Future research may explore mitigation methods regarding the negative effect that additional non-counseling duties have on school counselors while also investigating ways to increase further the value that school counselors perceive that they may have.
