Brisa Michelle Lagunas
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore how high school counselors and AP Spanish teachers in high-poverty schools in AZ recruited Latino students into AP Spanish courses. How high school counselors and AP Spanish teachers recruit Latino students into Spanish AP courses was unknown. Peplau's Theory of Interpersonal Relationships was used. The first research question focused on the strategies of high school counselors and AP Spanish teachers to identify potential AP Spanish students. The second research question was centered on how high school counselors and AP Spanish teachers build relationships with potential students. The last question focused on their strategies to recruit Latino students into AP courses. Thirty participants for the sample population, including 12 AP Spanish teachers and 18 High school counselors working in the high-poverty areas in AZ. The researcher utilized Saldana (2015) four steps in thematic analysis to analyze the data: (1) identifying codes in raw data, (2) developing high-level categories and creating categories of codes, (3) reviewing high-level categories and synthesizing them to generate themes through analytic memoing, and (4) apply developing themes to the research questions of the study. Three themes emerged from comparing the data sources in this study. (1) Invest in marketing the AP Spanish program to appeal to all students. (2) improve relationships with stakeholders to have a successful AP Program and (3) A list of teaching strategies that are best practices to recruit and retain Latino students.
