An Evaluation of a Self-Instruction Package for Training Important Interventionist Skills: Acquisition and Generalization

Behavioral skills training (BST) (Parsons et al., 2012) is a common intervention for training staff and caregivers to engage in various important behaviors. However, BST is labor intensive, costly, and often requires extensive involvement from a supervisor or experienced trainer (DiGennaro Reed & Henley, 2015), which may not always be feasible. Thus, training models that are more efficient and less resource intensive are needed. One such group of procedures are self-instruction (self-directed) training procedures, which include video modeling and written instructions. Recently, researchers have evaluated the effects of enhanced written instructions (i.e., step by step instructions, written with minimal technical jargon, and may include pictures or diagrams; Shapiro et al., 2016) for training staff to engage in various important skills (e.g., conduct preference assessments, implement discrete trial teaching). The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of enhanced written instructions (EWI) on necessary skills for novice behavior interventionists. Additionally, the current study attempted to replicate results with multiple important behaviors within subjects and assess generalization of skills. Results suggested EWI was effective for acquisition and generalization for some skills across participants; however, modified EWI was necessary for acquisition, generalization, or both for other skills.
