An estimated 10 out of every 1,000 children in preschool are expelled from childcare programs. The purpose of this qualitative instrumental multiple case study was to explore the experiences of childcare directors with preschool expulsion and their perceptions regarding the why and how the phenomenon and the nature of their role in supporting teachers, parents, and students in addressing the problem. Eight center directors at high-quality Level 3 and 4 childcare centers were interviewed, and thematic analysis was employed to analyze the data and answer the research questions posed. Participants' experiences revealed that expulsions were necessary to safeguard the safety of children and staff, though directors engage in various procedures and resources prior to expulsions. To prevent suspensions and expulsions, directors try to employ qualified staff and partner with families; however, additional strategies are needed. Recommendations for practice include childcare directors should purchase and implement the Pyramid Model, state agencies should budget for and establish support centers with mental health consultants capable of handling the increased challenging behaviors in preschools, and directors should consider director support groups to network and collaborate on generating ideas and sharing resources to target reduction in expulsion in preschools.
