ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilkes University
The gender imbalance among heads of international schools is significant: 75% are male and 25% are female. The ascent of women and women of color to the head of an international school is a complex issue that is affected by many social, cultural, and institutional variables. Even though there has been progress towards more diversity and inclusion, many women of color still face significant obstacles in the pursuit of international school leadership positions. This qualitative case study examined the experiences that women of color (African-American, Latinx, Asian, Indian, and Indigenous) during their transition from teaching to leading an international school as the head of school. The study was guided by the following research question: How have women of color experienced the transition from Pre-K-12 teacher to head of international school? The absence of women of color in international school leadership positions results in less diverse representation (CIS, 2021). The theory used in the study was Schlossberg's transition theory (Schlossberg et al., 1995). Findings revealed that study participants experienced obstacles and stress. The participants became resilient while relying on their faith. In turn, participants experienced leadership and change in their schools. Mentorship and support became important to the participants during their transition. Recommendations for practice include actively recruiting and retaining women of color as heads of international schools and providing support by ensuring women of color are vital members of the team. Recommendations for future research include conducting a comparison investigation with women of color serving in the head of school role in international schools in different geographical regions and countries.
