Disproportionality in Public High Schools: A Look into Advanced Placement Opportunities for Students of Color with Learning Disabilities
Jessica Q. Burns-Turch
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Marymount University
The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate disproportionality with respect to Advanced Placement (AP) opportunities for students of color, post qualification, for special education services via the label Specific Learning Disability (SLD). Multiple data sources including existing data, surveys, and semi structured interviews were coded and analyzed. Findings from this study yielded the following themes: (a) study ability, (b) staff support, (c) staff preparedness, (d) cultural responsiveness, and (e) systems management. This study drew a connection between these themes and Howard Becker's labeling theory, discussed the practical and theoretical implications of this research, and offered viable solutions to combat the disproportionality in Advanced Placement and increase opportunities for students of color with learning disabilities.
