The Relationship between Character Strengths and Academic Achievement
Paul Vespo
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, Fairleigh Dickinson University
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the degree to which character strengths can predict grade point average (GPA), in comparison with and over and above the established predictors of grit, self-control, and conscientiousness. The current study was based on the work of Boerma and Neill (2020), who examined the relationship between the grit facet of perseverance of effort, self-control, and conscientiousness as predictors of college students' self-reported GPA and academic satisfaction. Findings indicated that life satisfaction was a positive predictor of academic satisfaction, suggesting the intuitive conclusion that general life satisfaction and academic satisfaction are related. Regarding exploratory analysis, only humility, curiosity, and prudence were independent significant predictors and honesty, fairness, and kindness were associated with means > 4.0 on the 5-point VIA scales. Results indicate that these character strengths may stem from emerging adults' perceptions of their academic performance and endeavors.
