Interventions, Resources, and Supports for Special Education Students Particularly Those under the Eligibility of Emotional Disturbance in Minimizing Recidivism
Elvia Hernandez
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, Alliant International University
Children and adolescents are imprisoned every day in juvenile detention institutions across the United States (Sickmund, 2002). Many adolescents with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) will struggle upon their release from juvenile detention center when attempting to reintegrate into society, with their family, and their school. Recidivism is particularly prevalent among adolescents with EBD. Recidivism occurs when an individual is released from a detention institution only to re-offend and be detained again. Furthermore, adolescents encounter several obstacles that affect their academic performance, such as grade retention, detention in juvenile justice systems, a lack of resources, being in the foster care system, mental health issues, and school failure. Students with emotional and behavioral problems, in general, will require support from many service systems to address their needs (Leone et al., 2002). A toolkit 'Comprehensive Toolkit for Recidivism Prevention' was created to help prevent recidivism, it can be used by school staff including but not limited to administrators, school psychologist, teachers, special education professionals, mental health staff, parents, and students. It is recommended that this toolkit be used in collaboration with other supporters and with school interventions or services.
