Victor R. Saunders
ProQuest LLC, D.B.A. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how American vocational students describe personal, behavioral, and environmental factors that contribute to their career decisions in the state of Utah. According to the problem statement, it was not known how American vocational students describe the personal, behavioral, and environmental factors that contribute to their career decisions. The first research question was how do American vocational students describe personal factors that contribute to career decisions? The second research question was how do American vocational students describe behavioral factors that contribute to career decisions? The third research question was how do American vocational students describe environmental factors that contribute to career decisions? Bandura's triadic reciprocal model of causality was adopted as the theoretical foundation. A thematic analysis was performed on raw data from a sample of 20 semi-structured interviews and two focus groups used to answer three research questions. Three themes were discovered for the first research question, including Debt Free, Career Advancement, and Better Job/Better Future. Two themes were discovered for the second research question, including Less Time Spent in School and Passion. Two themes were discovered for the third research question, including Support System and Flexibility. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
