The Deployment Experience from the Perspective of Military Children
Tracy Daughtry
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, The University of North Carolina at Wilmington
Military children go through an adjustment when their military parent leaves for deployment. This study examined deployment through the lens of military children. It looked closely at how they perceive and describe their deployment experience. It used the emotional cycle of deployment to understand their emotions during the three deployment phases. The study followed a phenomenological qualitative research design. Participants were five military children ages 9 to 11, each completing a series of three one-on-one semi-structured interviews. Findings from the interviews concluded that military children experience several emotions and view deployment as negative. They coped and adjusted to the deployment and had a positive family view. The children gained an understanding of deployment that led to them knowing how to help other military children. These findings help military parents, school staff, and others working with military children understand their experience and their emotional needs to support them better.
