Generation Z: Attitudes & Perceptions of Giving Philanthropically to Their Alma Mater
Tori McLean Good
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Converse University
Institutions of higher education are partially funded by philanthropic gifts to support various initiatives on campus ranging from student scholarships, specific programmatic needs, construction, and everything in between. As Generation Z becomes the predominant generational cohort graduating from colleges and universities, advancement teams must understand their motivations and perceptions related to philanthropic giving to their alma mater. In addition, institutional leaders must understand the correlation of involvement and engagement of young alumni while enrolled to determine Generation Z's likelihood of giving philanthropically post-graduation. Extant research regarding Generation Z does not focus specifically on philanthropic giving; advancement teams must devise strategies to support appeals to Generation Z and avoid a one size fits all approach. Moving forward, older generations cannot solely support philanthropic giving. Through a quantitative approach, the researcher surveyed Generation Z and Millennial young alumni from a small, private liberal arts institution in the Southeast. Despite society's generally negative perception of Generation Z, the cohort generally favored philanthropic giving to their alma mater and cited correlated positive experiences and engagement. To capture Generation Z support, institutions must consider a holistic campus approach to philanthropy and steward current students to be conscious donors prior to graduation.
