A Study of Principal Leadership Styles: A Self-Assessment by Elementary and Middle School Principals in Central Mississippi

This study was designed to determine how elementary and middle school principals assess their leadership styles. The self-evaluation MLQ form 5X for leaders will be used to determine principals' perception of their leadership qualities. The participants in this study consisted of elementary and middle principals in school districts in central Mississippi. Respondents were asked to decide the degree to which the listed leadership behaviors closely matches their own behavior by selecting from one of the five choices: Not at all, once in a while, sometimes, fairly often and frequently, if not always, a score from 0-4 was assessed for each item. Based on the participants' responses, a score ranging from 0 to 80 was assigned for transformational leadership; a score from 0 to 48 was assigned for transactional leadership; and a score ranging from 0 to 16 was assigned for passive-avoidant leadership. Principal response from the questionnaire were collected through Google Forms and exported into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. Data then entered into the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) program and analyzed using descriptive statistics to determine frequency of response, means, and standard deviation for each variable.
