Learning engagement and career-relevant skills are both important elements in learning. Unfortunately, there is a lack of research related to learning engagement in massive open online courses (MOOCs) from MOOC instructors' point of view. Research is also needed on MOOC instructors' strategies to provide career-relevant content to the learners. In response, this study investigated the strategies of MOOC instructors in the field of business, economics, and management use to promote learning engagement and career-relevant skills. Specifically, this study utilized an explanatory sequential design. The study data included 88 survey participants, 12 MOOC instructor interviews, and eight course observations. Results indicated that most of these MOOC instructors agreed that learning engagement is important to MOOC success; nevertheless, some of them stated that designing MOOCs for learner engagement was difficult. The researcher also found that sometimes MOOC instructors lack sufficient freedom and resources in designing and delivering their course. Further findings indicate that more than half (64.8%) of these MOOC instructors felt that they expended extensive effort in designing their MOOCs to promote learning engagement. The findings also showed that almost 60% of these MOOC instructors reported that they used high effort in promoting career-relevant skills. The most frequent strategies and resources used by these MOOC business, economics, and management instructors in promoting those skills include providing: (1) video lectures and tutorials, (2) problem solving using real job problems (authentic contexts), (3) discussion forums, (4) reflective thinking, and (5) video examples (e.g., TED talks, YouTube, etc.).The researcher hopes the results of this study will inform current and future MOOC instructors and designers regarding the effective strategies used by MOOC instructors to foster engaging MOOC-based learning environments. Practical implications for future study and limitations of this study are discussed. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
