The Effects of Mindfulness and Yoga Activities on Teacher Stress
Ava Gibson
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Concordia University Wisconsin
The profession of teaching is considered to be a very stressful occupation. Experiencing elevated levels of stress is associated with harmful outcomes such as mental illness, burnout, and attrition from the profession. The research conducted in this study explored the relationship between teachers who define themselves as stressed and their participation in mindfulness and yoga activities as professional development. Teachers who defined themselves as stressed participated in mindfulness and yoga activities as a professional development. The participants completed a Perceived Stress Scale questionnaire before and after the conclusion of the activities. A significant difference was found in the Perceived Stress Scale score among teachers who defined themselves as stressed. Results indicate that the perceived stress level of teachers who define themselves as stressed is reduced after participating in mindfulness and yoga activities as professional development. Suggestions for further research are also included. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
