A Qualitative Comparison of Interpreter Perceptions of In-Person and Virtual Medical Interpretation
Kristopher Keating
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology
This study addresses the issue of language barriers between healthcare providers and patients in medical contexts. Such barriers can significantly hinder patients' access to quality healthcare and treatment. To this end, this qualitative research builds on previous studies and compares language interpreter perceptions of in-person and virtual interpretation in medical contexts. The study aims to gain insights into the quality of patient care provided through virtual interpretation and assess the need for training in this field. The study involves conducting interviews with ten professional medical interpreters who have experience in both in-person and virtual interpretation. Through these interviews, the study seeks to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the modes of interpretation and determine the best approach to take in different patient encounters. This information can help develop effective strategies and priorities for choosing between in-person and virtual interpretation for each patient interaction. By exploring the perspectives of interpreters who provide medical interpretation services, the study offers valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities of medical interpretation. It also highlights the need for appropriate training in foreign language interpretation, especially in the context of virtual interpretation. The results of this study can inform policymakers, healthcare providers, and interpreters on how to best utilize virtual interpretation to improve healthcare outcomes and patient experience. Overall, this study has the potential to contribute to the development of effective and efficient medical interpretation services.
