Denise Guzman
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Aurora University
This qualitative action research case study examined the high school to college transition experiences of 11 Latino/a parents of first-generation college students. Participants attended a two-day workshop series, the purpose of which was to provide parents with college knowledge information to better support their children when transitioning to postsecondary education. Study objectives focused on Latino/a parents' understanding of the college process, how parental support programs offer college knowledge and the outcomes of these programs in assisting families with the postsecondary transition process. Data was collected from the recorded workshops and through pre- and post-assessments that were given to each parent participant at each workshop. Results found that college parent programs help parents develop post-secondary knowledge that in turn helps them support their children as they plan for their educational career. Resulting themes included: Learning to Support, Transmit Confidence, and Information Fading. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
