An Evaluation of a Department Chair Institute for Academic Excellence
AnnMarie Hughes
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, New Jersey City University
Department chairs are tasked with a variety of responsibilities including informing institutional decisions, yet approximately 65% of department chairs have reported receiving no training, and two-thirds of those who received training believed it was not adequate. I conducted an external program evaluation of a department chair institute for academic excellence at a community college in the southeast. Using a single case study design, participant and facilitator perspectives were leveraged to answer the following six program evaluations questions: (1) To what extent did participants believe they achieved the outcomes of the Department Chair Institute for Academic Excellence? (2) To what extent were the topics meaningful to the participants' role as a department chair? (3) What did participants learn at the institute? (4) What did the participants find most valuable about the Department Chair Institute for Academic Excellence? (5) To what extent and in what way did participants apply what they learned to their current roles? (6) What suggestions did the facilitator and participants have for future department chair institutes? Data sources included an end-of-program survey of participants' experiences, facilitator reflections, and participants' key takeaways from individual sessions. Findings from this program evaluation indicated that the participants believed they achieved the learning outcomes of the department chair training program and believed that a variety of topics were of value. The two topics that all participants strongly agreed were of value were the department chair responsibilities and program and discipline development strategies. Chairs reported gaining knowledge about institutional resources and tools, emotional intelligence, equity-based practices, and general leadership skills. Data also revealed that chairs appreciated the opportunities to connect and collaborate with fellow chairs and that they were using the knowledge and skills learned in their positions. I provide recommendations and resources for those interested in offering a leadership institute as well as recommendations for future program evaluators.
