ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, San Diego State University
This research examined the experiences of Filipinx California community college alumni involved in a Filipinx learning community within the last 5 years. This research explored the influencing factors leading Filipinx students to join Filipinx learning communities and how Filipinx culture and the concept of family was incorporated within the cohort structure. Lastly, this research examined how the Filipinx learning community experience influenced students in transitioning to their academic and/or career path. The study used a phenomenological methodological approach and used semistructured interviews with 12 participants. Data were analyzed through open and axial coding and resulted in four themes. The first theme identified the family as being essential within the Filipinx culture and as a core foundation of the learning community itself. The second theme highlighted the strong foundation of social support that the Filipinx learning community provides. The third theme describes a heightened sense of Filipinx cultural affiliation and identity, along with a deep sense of pride for Filipinx culture and history. The fourth and final theme emphasizes participation in Filipinx learning communities is a transformational student experience. This research contributes to literature on how postsecondary educational institutions can provide tailored support for Filipinx students and advocate for their success more intentionally.
