Hidden Stories: Uncovering Racial Disparities in Colleges' and Universities' Student Conduct Systems

While racially minoritized students are gaining access and enrolling in post-secondary institutions at higher rates, institutionalized oppression and exclusionary practices impact students' experience and success. Colleges and universities have an obligation to create environments that are welcoming, just, and fair for all students who choose to enroll in their institutions. The student conduct system, meant to advocate inclusiveness, fairness, and justice, can create intentional or unintentional racial disparities. However, a lack of academic research and data related to the topic of student conduct and race limits awareness and transparency in the possible racial disparities that exist in higher education. Research is limited regarding discipline and race in the higher education system, yet vast research in the K-12 education system is available. The K-12 research points to clear racial disparities that disadvantage primarily Black and Latinx students, indicating they are more likely to be disciplined, suspended, and expelled from school. Also, research illustrates that racial disparities exist in the criminal justice system, demonstrating that Blacks and Latinx people are more likely to be convicted of crimes and receive much harsher sentences. Acknowledging racial disparities in comparable systems in society raises the question of whether higher education might experience similar issues. Thus, it is important to explore the student conduct system. The purpose of this research was to explore student discipline and race in higher education in the U.S. with a qualitative narrative inquiry methodology. More specifically, the study explored the experiences of student conduct administrators/officers working with racially minoritized students who participated in the disciplinary process. Ultimately, the research uncovered racial disparities in the student conduct system in higher education institutions.
