Illuminating the Black Male Athlete Experience at Community College
Trishana Michelle Norquist
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, San Diego State University
There is a gap in the research surrounding Black male athletes and their experience at community college. The research conducted in this study aimed to utilize a phenomenological approach to allow Black male athletes at community college to tell their own story. This study focused on four research questions: (1) How do Black male athletes believe community college should prioritize their environmental and academic success? (2) What role does Blackness and anti-Blackness play in the educational and athletic experience for Black male athletes? (3) What role does the institution play in impacting the sense of self-efficacy, educational motivation, and identity for Black male athletes? and (4) How is the institution creating a culture that enhances Black male athletes' sense of belonging and connectedness? With both the socio-ecological outcomes model (Harris III & Wood, 2016) and Black critical theory (Dumas & Ross, 2016) as the guiding conceptual frameworks, this phenomena was shared through the lens of Blackness with a focus on how Blackness and anti-Blackness impacted the participants view of their educational experience at a southern California community college. Eight Black male athletes were interviewed and their responses were analyzed by open and axial coding. Five themes embodied the study's findings: (1) Survival Mode, (2) Built Different, (3) Being Black Under a Microscope, (4) Brothers in the Game, (5) Facilities Over Athletes. Through these findings, participants shared experiences of cultural isolation, anti-Blackness interactions with employees of the college, homelessness, hunger, and strength in bonding with other Black male athletes that understand their struggle. Research findings have the ability to assist community colleges in more effectively implementing and practicing policies as related to the basic and emotional needs of Black male athletes at their college.
