Preferred Leadership Style and Competitive Motivation of Esports Players in Higher Education

Esports is a billion-dollar industry and is making its way into higher education. Due to its newness to higher education, esports has not been thoroughly studied. This study surveyed American collegiate esports players to determine both their preferred coaching style, and what motivates them to compete. The survey instruments used were the Sport Orientation Questionnaire and the Revised Leadership Scale for Sport. Results of an ANOVA and subsequent Tukey's "HSD" showed that among the 46 survey respondents, there was a statistically significant preference for the leadership style of Situational Considerations (M = 4.31) followed by Teaching and Instruction (M = 4.25). Autocratic Behavior (M = 2.52) was the coaching style least preferred. Results of an ANOVA run on the SOQ responses showed Competitiveness (M = 4.58) vs. Win Orientation (M = 4.24) contained the most significant statistical difference with a p-value of p < 0.01.
