Overcoming Challenges of Blended Learning among Teachers, Students, and Parents: A Deeper Look at the Triad Relationship
Ericka Ragland Rochelle
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Austin Peay State University
Teachers, students, and parents working together in pursuit of positive educational outcomes for students is known as the triad relationship. The triad relationship is most seen in traditional learning environments but has been highlighted as a need for both virtual and blended learning environments. Blended learning following the COVID-19 pandemic has presented many rural, public schools with challenges in developing alternate instructional methods. Through a convergent, mixed methods research design, this study explored the unique challenges faced by teachers, students, and parents. Instead of assuming the challenges can be overcome, this study sought to reveal specific supports that are needed if the challenges are to be circumvented. Finally, this study examined to what extent level of education and age were associated with teachers' and parents' perceptions of roles within the triad relationship. Participants included teachers (n = 155) and parents (n = 587) from a rural, public school district in Middle Tennessee, and all participants had been a part of the district for a minimum of 5 years. Qualitative data comprised unique challenges faced and supports needed by teachers and parents as well as their perceptions of those of students. Quantitative data included level of education and age of teachers and parents as well as their perceptions of roles within the triad relationship. Open-ended surveys and interview data were analyzed using inductive coding. SPSS was used to analyze the quantitative data. For the closed-ended surveys, descriptive statistics were used, while an ANCOVA was used to examine the extent of associations between level of education, age, and teacher and parent perceptions of roles within the triad relationship.
