Choosing a Language Modality: The Lived Experiences of Parents of Deaf Children with Cochlear Implants
Charlotte Anne Walker
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Concordia University Chicago
This qualitative study involved American parents of deaf children who chose cochlear implants (CIs) and shared their perception of the lived experience of choosing Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) as a communication modality for their child. This study also involved the parents discussing their experiences with hearing professionals and how their experiences affected their decision-making process. This study followed a phenomenological methodology. The purpose was to help professionals best understand how parents perceive support and interaction during this critical time of their child's life. Data came from one-on-one interviews with each parent via Zoom. Data was analyzed, coded, and produced six themes. The results indicate that if parents feel supported and not pressured to quickly decide the best pathway for their deaf child, they are more likely to make an informed decision that will benefit their family and ultimately their child's language development.
