ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona
Parent engagement in middle school has the potential to yield positive effects on the academic success of students and contribute to a growth in a feeling of self-worth. Parents want the best for their children and based on their own experiences, they do what they can to support their children in school and beyond. This study examined the stories of parents to identify key themes in their engagement with a school site. The purpose of this study was to focus on the perspectives of Latinx parents as they engaged with a middle school by attending events, volunteering, and/or participating in committees or clubs. Using personal narratives of each participant, the researcher addressed each of the three research questions presented. This study explored the factors of parent engagement that encourages Latinx parents to participate in middle school activities, in addition to the barriers that exist to hinder the participation of Latinx parents in middle schools. And finally, the researcher asked the participants what recommendations they have for parent engagement of Latinx families in middle schools. This study found that successful parent engagement in middle schools requires purposeful planning by school leadership teams, consideration for a variety of external factors, and a collection of input from current parents of the student population.
