Lewis, Ricardia S.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
Leadership has evolved over the years, and organizations have witnessed the rise of servant leadership as a key approach in creating a foundation for proper engagement of followers and building a paradigm to solve problems. While the role of school leadership in essential to creating positive school cultures and climates, a systematic approach to training administrators has yet to be chosen. The purpose of this qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological study was to examine the role of servant leadership practices on the culture and climate of inner-city elementary schools, through staff members' lived experiences. The overarching research question was: What are the characteristics and influence of an administrator demonstrating servant-leadership attributes in the school setting? The research made use of servant-leadership as a conceptual framework, focused on the examination of practices of servant-leadership found in an educational setting. Participants were chosen from teachers at high poverty Metro-Detroit elementary schools. The researcher contacted several principals for qualified elementary schools and sent a recruitment letter. Participants agreed to contribute to the study by contacting the researcher, agreeing to recorded semi-structured interviews. Common themes included support, open communication, growth and development, community building, being aware of the building needs, and empowerment. Recommendations for future practice include principals providing regular feedback to their teachers and using multiple channels of communication. Recommendations for future research include using a larger variety of school settings or geographical areas; examine servant leadership practices in educational settings besides elementary schools; have a diverse representation of gender; explore other research designs.
