An Examination of Employees' Perceptions of the Impact of Leadership Styles: A Qualitative Case Study
Ochoa, Amy Suzanne
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
This study examined school counselors' perceptions of how leadership styles affect work output, staff comradery, and employee morale. The research problem examined in this qualitative descriptive case study was work output, staff comradery, and employee morale differ greatly depending on the leadership style that the immediate supervisor implements within the educational work setting. The purpose of this study was to explore perceptions of how leadership styles have affected work output, staff comradery, and employee morale of employees in an educational department in a public school district in Southern California. This study was guided by the theoretical frameworks of the transformational leadership theory and the organizational effectiveness theory. The method that was used was qualitative and the design was a descriptive case study. This study included a sample size of 10 school counselors in a public school located in Southern California. A thematic analysis was used to analyze the data in this study. The findings of this study indicated several themes. The themes included perceptions of leadership style as having a positive effect on school counselors' staff morale. In addition, perceptions of staff morale were perceived as more effective when communication, teamwork, and positive incentives were used. Other themes indicated that a leaders' leadership style does not affect intrinsic motivation regarding work output and that a leaders' leadership style can set the tone for building a positive work environment. Overall, the implications of the findings are that leaders can have a positive impact on staff morale and staff comradery, but are not always perceived as having an impact on employee work output. One recommendation for practice is that school leaders receive consistent and ongoing training from their organization. A recommendation for future research is to examine the relationship between leadership style and employee satisfaction ratings.
