ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Aurora University
This multi-method study investigated the factors most influential when teachers seriously consider leaving the profession. Everyday across America classrooms are filled with daily and long-term substitute teachers. Education is facing a major crisis in teacher shortages. The following study tried to understand what is causing teachers to seriously consider leaving the profession and what will it take to get them to stay. There is literature discussing why new and experienced teachers are leaving the profession. Surveys were distributed to teachers in two high schools in the northwest suburbs. The multi-method study relied on the perception and responses of teachers who had seriously considered leaving the profession. Knowing which teachers are satisfied at work and what improved job satisfaction are important to the school organization for improving organization efficiency and effectiveness and in reducing the number of teachers who leave the profession. The researcher entered the rankings and identified the top three reasons as directly related to the students they teach. Various professional development opportunities were outlined to offer continued support to teachers. This study answered the main research question: why do teachers leave the profession? The paper concludes with general recommendations for future research. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
