An Examination of Transformational Leadership Strategies on Teacher Retention in Selected High Schools Located in the Midlands in South Carolina

This causal-comparative study investigated a potential relationship between transformational leadership in educational leaders and teacher retention in public high schools in South Carolina. This research study examined transformational leadership strategies in regard to teacher retention. The purpose of the study was to determine teacher perceptions of transformational leadership strategies in teachers with varied degree levels, years of experience, and years in current schools. The data was compiled from a demographic questionnaire and two psychometrically validated self-report questionnaires combined into one survey instrument. The TCU Survey of Transformational Leadership Program Staff Version (TCU-STL-S) (Institute of Behavioral Research, 2009) assessed overall transformational leadership, as well as five dimensions of transformational leadership--individualized influence, intellectual stimulation, individualized consideration, empowerment, and inspirational motivation--on each of five subscales. The data was examined to see if there were any significant correlations among teacher retention and teacher perceptions of transformational leadership strategies in teachers with varied degree levels, years of experience, and years in current schools. The data revealed a significant difference in transformational strategies between retained and non-retained teachers. Transformational behaviors were rated higher among the principals in retained teachers but not those teachers who did not retain their position. Individual districts can apply transformational leadership to teacher incentive programs, professional development curricula, recruitment efforts, and retention efforts (e.g., staff cohesion, mentorship among colleagues, and overall morale).
