Preparing English Language Learners for College: The Role of High School Counselors in Supporting Students' College Readiness
Hobbs, Simon
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Notre Dame of Maryland University
The number of English language learners (ELLs) in schools is growing, yet many ELLs struggle with being college-ready by the time they graduate high school. School counselors are an important part of a student's college preparation while in high school. School counselors help students create their class schedules, learn about college requirements, and support students in making their post-secondary decisions. This mixed methods study analyzed former high school ELLs' perceptions and experiences of how their high school counselors prepared them for college academically, socially, and emotionally. In addition, this study analyzed how school counselors used the Community Cultural Wealth model (Yosso, 2005) to support ELL college readiness. This study included 113 participants who completed the survey, and 18 participants who agreed to be interviewed. Participants were divided into two groups: college-ready and not-college-ready. Those participants who were college-ready were enrolled in a credit-bearing class at the community college, while those who were not-college-ready were not enrolled in a credit-bearing community college course. The study found that school counselor support does have an impact on ELL college readiness, especially in the areas of academic and emotional support. College-ready participants identified certain attributes of a school counselor that supported college readiness, including acknowledging ELLs linguistic strengths, supporting ELL access to academically challenging courses, and encouraging ELLs to pursue their post-secondary goals. The recommendations from this study can assist high school counselors in preparing ELL students for college.
