Learning from the Sandy Hook Elementary Tragedy: School Safety Protocols in a Suburban County, What We Learned as a Result
Jurs, Rebecca
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Aurora University
The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological case study was to investigate how school safety protocols have changed in a suburban county since the Sandy Hook Elementary 2012 school shooting. Through interviews of district safety directors and school resource officers and analyzing district school safety documents, this study showed how scenario planning and the Decision Affect Theory play a role in current school safety training protocols. Examination of how safety protocols have evolved since Sandy Hook lessons learned by district participants as they continue to consider how to navigate and improve the effectiveness of school safety training. This study examined four components of the multiple facets of school safety through Education, Psychology, Criminology, and Social perspectives of safety training. The data presented in narrative format illustrates the lived experiences of the study's participants. Data uncovered specific themes of staff training, run-hide-fight strategies, threat assessment, and reunification, which aligned with the theoretical frameworks of scenario planning and Decision Affect Theory. The conclusion of the study focuses on implications for specific audiences in the field of education. It also gives thought to future studies to improve safety practices, which result from our learning from past mistakes of school shooting tragedies.
