The Recruitment and Onboarding of the Board of Trustees: An Action Research Study
Schodowski, Francis G.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
The purpose of this Action Research study was to examine and improve the recruitment and onboarding of members of the Board of Trustees. To accomplish this, Cycle 1 of research included semi-structured interviews with 11 individuals who serve as current or former members of the Board of Trustees at Excaliber College as well as key members of the administration's leadership who are engaged with members of the Board of Trustees. Through these interviews, data was gathered, analyzed, and coded to give rise to the action steps taken in the implementation of Cycle 2. The action steps, including a survey and semi-structured interviews, led to an onboarding orientation session that was designed, implemented, and evaluated in Cycle 2 to assess needs of new members of the Board of Trustees in effectively preparing them for their tenure of service. The findings included the themes of defined understanding, who's who, and continue educating. Clarity in what it is that the members of the Board should be doing, the expectations, and the impact it makes on the institution are found in defined understanding. Who's who, as a finding, points to the importance of the personal relationships that are desired at some point throughout the time from recruitment through service to be impactful, and it indicates from whom to learn. The last finding, continue educating, is an indication of the importance to recognize the value of the ongoing sharing of information with the members of the Board of Trustees. Learning is continuous as trends and the environment of higher education are in a constant state of change. Being informed of these trends, along with the happenings and occurrences at the college itself, are things that will benefit the trustees in their service, particularly among the trustees who are not involved in the day-to-day life of a college.
