The Relationship between Attending an Impoverished School and Experiencing a K-12 Public School Shooting
Elder, Terri M.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, North Greenville University
Theories abound on why school shootings occur. Current literature centers on shooter profiles and rarely focuses on where the shootings occur. This study investigates the relationship between impoverished schools and if those schools are more likely to experience a school shooting than non-impoverished schools. Four factors of poverty were isolated: median household income; the percentage living below the poverty line; the percentage receiving SNAP benefits or food stamps; and the percentage out of the workforce. Data indicated a strong relationship between attending an impoverished school and experiencing a school shooting. Median household income, the percentage of families living below the poverty line, and the percentage receiving food stamps/SNAP benefits all had a strong relationship to experiencing a school shooting. The factor of the percentage out of the workforce did not have a relationship to school shootings. To decrease the likelihood of experiencing a school shooting in an impoverished school, specific strategies for preparation, vigilance, training, prevention, and student empowerment are needed.
