Newton-Bird, Kelly
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
Compassion fatigue is a phenomenon that can occur when individuals who work in helping professions become overwhelmed by the emotional demands of their work. School counselors, in particular, are at risk for compassion fatigue when working with students who have experienced adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) can include experiences such as abuse, neglect, or household dysfunction, and can have a significant impact on a student's mental and emotional well-being. In this qualitative study, we will explore the experiences of school counselors who work with students who have experienced ACEs. By understanding the experiences of school counselors, we can develop interventions and support systems to help those dealing with compassion fatigue. This research answered the question, "What are urban public-school counselors' experiences of compassion fatigue when counseling students who have experienced Adverse Childhood Experiences?" Qualitative generic inquiry research provides valuable insight into the of school counselors dealing with compassion fatigue. By conducting semi-structured interviews with nine school counselors who work with students who have experienced ACEs, we gain a deeper understanding of the challenges they face and the strategies they use to cope. For example, some counselors may engage in self-care activities such as exercise, meditation, or hobbies outside of work to manage their stress. Others may seek support from colleagues or supervisors, attend professional development workshops, or participate in counseling or therapy. It is essential to prioritize the well-being of school counselors, who play a critical role in supporting the mental and emotional health of their students. By providing them with the resources and support they need, we can ensure that they can continue to make a positive impact in the lives of the students they serve.
