"The Least of These" The Perceived Effectiveness of Identified Homeless Student Resources from the Perspective of Administrators and Support Staff at Accredited Historically Black Colleges and Universities
Frederick, Yvonne Smith
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Columbia International University
A growing and often unidentified segment of students on campuses who are hidden in plain sight are those who are homeless. In 2019, the national average for homelessness at two- and four-year institutions in the United States was between 14-16% (Baker-Smith et al., 2020). For these students, very small issues can become huge problems, such as the lack of a consistent place to sleep to get a good nights' rest, shower accommodations, a space to study, a safe place to keep important documents and possessions, and a lack of parental/adult support. Some financial stressors can include insufficient financial aid assistance, access to adequate food, transportation, health care, and childcare. Due to the stigma and barriers of being homeless, this population of students are less likely to self-identify, take advantage of available resources, and build relationships with peers and support staff members who can assist them on their educational journey (Chaplot et al., 2015; Ingram et al., 2017). Ingram et al. continued to state that these issues affect learning and the effort that can be devoted to school. They compromise homeless students' chances for degree completion and affect the institution in which the students are enrolled (Broton et al., 2014; Broton & Goldrick-Rab, 2016). Therefore, the goal of this research is to show what resources are offered for homeless students and the perceived value of those resources from the perspective of administrators, financial aid counselors, academic advisors, and housing representatives at Historical Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Through this research, learning more about the resources offered on these campuses will provide opportunities for the advocation of resources and create opportunities for discussions toward examining and implementing the necessary resources to assist the population of homeless students on various campuses.
