A Phenomenology of Betrayal: Undergraduate BIPOC Experiences of Institutional Betrayal
Becker, Samantha
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D.(Educ.) Dissertation, Drake University
Hate and bias incidents have been on the rise at college campuses since 2016, with a marked increase in incidents targeting racial identity. As a result, BIPOC undergraduate students are increasingly faced with the kinds of harm and hurt that come along with a bias incident while university administrators negotiate the process of bias response. This study adds to limited existing research on navigating hate and bias incidents in undergraduate BIPOC populations. This study also adds to historical literature describing the evolving relationship university spaces have with BIPOC communities. The institutional betrayal model was developed by Smith and Freyd (2014) and serves as the framework through which this study was organized, and data analyzed. An interview guide was developed to gather data from five participants. Data were analyzed and coded using in vivo coding and theming. Findings showcase the impacts of hate and bias response and the campus environment on experiences of institutional betrayal.
