Digital Scriptures, Perceived Spiritual and Learning Experiences: A Qualitative Descriptive Study

The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how seminary and institute students describe their spiritual and learning experiences when studying scripture in a digital format in Alberta, Canada. Cognitive flexibility theory provided the theoretical framework and lens whereby the researcher explored the phenomenon and was used describe the intentions and outcomes of seminary and institute student attitudes towards using digital scripture applications. This study employed a qualitative methodology study as it allowed for exploratory research and provided information about the ongoing issues surrounding the studied phenomenon and the experiences associated with studying scripture in a digital format. The study used verbal questions and answers from participants to obtain an extensive understanding of the phenomenon in their own words, through their own lived experiences. A descriptive design was utilized to describe how seminary and institute students of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints describe their learning and spiritual experiences when studying scripture in a digital format. The sample was drawn from 20 seminary and institute students. Utilizing Braun and Clarke's (2006) six-phase thematic analysis, the researcher identified the following themes: Digital resources influence spiritual experiences by adding meaning and depth, the digital features influence spiritual experiences and by minimizing distractions, digital scriptural resources influence learning experiences by increasing understanding, and scriptural accessibility in a digital format promotes learning experiences.
