The Experiences of Prelicensure Nursing Program Administrators during the Coronavirus Pandemic: A Qualitative Study
Becker, Stephanie
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
The COVID-19 pandemic has influenced the academic and healthcare fields. There is a lack of research on the perspectives of nurse administrators, especially in academia. Program outcomes are a central component of measuring a program's successes. The pandemic forced accommodations in education and clinical practice; by transitioning to remote learning and replacing clinical instruction. These unique challenges and lack of research provided an opportunity to advance educational practice and sustain program management. This study was designed to answer one central question: "What are the experiences of prelicensure nursing program administrators as they manage program outcomes during the coronavirus pandemic?" This basic qualitative study explored the experiences of academic nurse administrators in managing program outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Academic nurse administrators who oversee and are responsible for a prelicensure nursing program in the Northeastern United States were recruited from accreditation agencies' public websites. The participants included 13 academic nurse administrators who provided data through semi-structured Zoom interviews with open-ended questions. Open-coding and thematic analysis of the data yielded seven themes: (a) program outcomes, (b) curriculum factors, (c) pandemic factors, (d) funding, (e) faculty factors, (f) student factors, and (g) support factors. The findings of this study showed that these themes are interconnected; none are siloed. Ultimately, it was a challenging time that caused fluctuations in curriculum, students, funding, faculty, support, and program outcomes. This study's contributions to academia include the academic administrator's perspective, the task of managing program outcomes, and educating during the pandemic. Recommendations for future research include studying the upcoming NCLEX exam results, following the "pandemic graduates" into the clinical world, and analyzing their experiences.
