Doster, Andrew James
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Delaware Valley University
The purpose of this mixed methods study was to gain an understanding of the personal and occupational stressors experienced by public school administrators, the self-care practices that are available through school district employment, and the utilized self-care practices to address those stressors. This study further investigated the differences that might exist based upon gender, administrative assignment, and enrollment size of building or district. Respondents were asked to complete a survey designed to elicit information and data regarding occupational stressors, personal stressors, school district provided supports, and self-care practices. Volunteers participated in an open-ended interview process to examine the lived experiences in both categories of stress, self-care practices, and district provided support in addressing stress. By synthesizing qualitative and quantitative data, the researcher was able to gain a deeper understanding of the most prevalent occupational and personal stressors experienced by public school administrators. COVID-19 is a prevalent occupational and personal stressor for the overall respondent group in the survey and for the interviewee group. Self-care practices vary among respondents. Spending Time with Family and Watching TV/Movies/YouTube/etc. are the most prevalent self-care practices. Employee Assistance Programs were known by only 70.01% of respondents and were frequently the only district provided support in addressing stress.
