A Generic Qualitative Study of Counselors' Experiences Implementing Suicide Prevention Strategies
Stovall, Tiffany C.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
The researcher described the experiences of school counselors who have implemented suicide prevention strategies at the middle and high school levels. Researchers have previously addressed school counselors' critical role in supporting students' social-emotional needs by implementing suicide prevention strategies as part of a comprehensive school counseling program. Aspiring school counselors may not feel prepared to implement suicide prevention. Although the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) mandated suicide prevention training, school counselors may be underprepared. The knowledge base regarding preparing and sustaining practitioner skills is limited, and youth suicide statistics and researchers addressed a need to implement successful suicide prevention strategies in schools. A generic qualitative inquiry was the research methodology utilized in this study. Twenty middle and high school counselors participated in semi-structured interviews with the researcher. The participants' responses were transcribed, and the data was coded with the assistance of quirkos.com through thematic analysis. Four themes emerged: mental health education matters, implementation factors for suicide prevention programming, pandemic impact, and community partnerships. Seven subthemes also emerged: parents and teachers, students, teacher reluctance, parent opposition, training and funding needs, leadership buy-in, and district-wide implementation. School counselors described their experiences implementing suicide prevention strategies and provided relevant information to the counselor education and supervision field. Recommendations for future research include implementing a case study and possibly a descriptive quantitative research design to continue understanding and addressing school counselors' needs.
