Teacher Perspectives of the Components of a Psychologically Safe Work Environment
Rainey-Clayton, Chantrese
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Virginia State University
This study is a qualitative study that explores how psychological safety impacts teachers' job satisfaction and longevity on their jobs by seeking their perceptions of the factors that contribute to a safe and supportive workplace. This study utilized phenomenological qualitative methodologies to analyze the research topic. The researcher constructed structured written and voice interview questions to elicit information from thirteen educators' perceptions of a psychologically safe workplace and how this perception influences feelings of job satisfaction and the likelihood of teachers staying in their current employment. The thematic data analysis revealed that creating a psychologically safe work environment for teachers requires a multifaceted approach that involves effective communication, competent leadership willing to take the necessary steps to prioritize psychological safety, and fostering a supportive and respectful culture. The findings of this study suggest that teachers are more likely to be satisfied with their job and less likely to leave their organizations when provided with a psychologically safe working environment.
