The Impact of Principals' Leadership Styles on School Culture, as Assessed by Teachers
Laird, Keba
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Mississippi College
The culture of a school influences how people think, feel, and act -- whether that be expressed as positive or negative behavior (Barth, 2002; Peterson, 2002). Research shows that teachers are more inspired to instruct and students are more motivated to learn in schools that foster a positive culture (Barth, 2002). Conversely, schools with negative cultures breed mistrust and conflict among faculty and staff and typically result in students who are likely to quit school before graduating from high school. Thus, the principal plays the most essential role in shaping the school's culture -- resulting in a highly successful school. Culture and leadership work hand in glove. Schein (2017) stated that when organizations start or when groups are formed there is always a leader who has a preferred way of doing things, and those preferences will be imposed on the group members. In the education arena, effective leadership is viewed as the catalyst for school change, student growth, teacher attrition, and the culture within the school (Troutman, 2012). School principals can affect positive change in their school culture as they uphold organizational values through their actions and decisions, and commit to enhancing their leadership capacity.
