Improving Mathematical Proficiency with Elementary Students through the Use of Math Conversations
Wooten, Jennifer W.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Trevecca Nazarene University
The primary objective of this study was to systematically review the available research collected thus far on the effectiveness of math conversations in improving the mathematical proficiency of elementary students. Ninety studies were analyzed to determine what effect math conversations had on the number sense, conceptual understanding, and students' self-efficacy in math in relation to students' mathematical proficiency by identifying the changes that occurred after implementing math conversations with elementary students. This study recommended that math conversations support students' achievement in mathematical proficiency by developing accurate, efficient, and flexible strategies while promoting students' mathematics self-efficacy.
