The Importance of Workplace Diversity in High Schools and the Hiring Practices to Support It
Ginestre, Michael V.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, State University of New York at Buffalo
The topic of achievement gaps between students of color and White students is much discussed and analyzed throughout our country. Schools that have a diverse student population and have subgroup achievement gaps are slow to adopt change that can close these gaps. One area schools need to examine is the diversity of their teacher workforce. The literature indicates that students achieve at higher levels in terms of graduation rates and chronic absenteeism with a more diverse teaching workforce. It also indicates that all students can benefit from a diverse workforce where the faculty can relate to different racial and cultural perspectives of the student body. Are schools doing enough, or anything at all, to diversify their faculty to the benefit of its student body? This study takes a close look at Sweet Home High School, a school where nearly 40 percent of students are identified as students of color, but over 98 percent of faculty are White. It includes an examination of achievement data in the areas of 4-year June graduation rate and chronic absenteeism to determine if achievement gaps exist among student subgroups as well as an examination of similar schools to Sweet Home High School, where the student body is composed of at least 30 percent students of color and at least 35 percent qualify for a free and reduced lunch. It also explores the diversity of the comparison schools' faculty and whether comparison schools have initiatives in place to purposefully and strategically diversify their faculty. This study shows that comparison schools have similar subgroup achievement gaps to Sweet Home, have primarily a White faculty, and have not started or are just starting to examine their hiring practices through the lens of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. This study makes recommendations, based on the research, that Sweet Home will implement to help diversify its faculty at the High School, and possibly throughout the school district.
